Most mattresses sold as "firm" land around 6 out of 10 — really medium-firm. If you sleep on your stomach or back, weigh more than average, or simply hate sinking in, that is often not firm enough. This guide ranks the firmest mattresses we have tested, using the firmness rating, pressure-mapping and edge results from each full review.

Quick answer: the firmest mattress we have tested is the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe — about 8/10 on its Firm side and 9/10 flipped. For heavier sleepers who want firm support with some cushioning, choose the Titan Hybrid Luxe (about 7/10). On a budget, the Zinus Green Tea 12" gives back sleepers firm, well-aligned support for under $300.

Who Actually Needs a Firm Mattress?

A firmer surface keeps the hips from sinking below the shoulders. That matters most for:

  • Stomach sleepers — a soft bed lets the hips drop and arches the lower back.
  • Back sleepers who feel "hammocked" on softer foam.
  • Heavier sleepers (230 lbs+), who compress comfort layers further, so a medium bed feels soft to them.

Firm is not automatically better for back pain. A randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain found medium-firm mattresses produced less pain and disability than firm ones (Kovacs et al., The Lancet, 2003). Side sleepers under about 150 lbs usually find truly firm beds press on the shoulder and hip. See our mattress firmness guide if you are unsure where you sit.

1. Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe — Best Firm Mattress Overall

Firmness: about 8/10 (Firm side) and 9/10 (Firmer side) | Score: 4.5/5 | Price: $1,189–$1,199 (Twin XL)

This is the only genuinely firm mattress in our test set rather than a medium-firm bed with a firm label. It is flippable, so you get two firmness levels in one mattress, and the 13-inch pocketed-coil core showed near-zero sagging under sustained weight. A quilted Luxe layer takes the hard edge off the surface without adding sink.

Best for: stomach and back sleepers, heavier sleepers, and anyone who has found other "firm" mattresses too soft. Skip if: you are a side sleeper under about 130 lbs — even the softer side is too firm for most.

2. Brooklyn Bedding Titan Hybrid Luxe — Best Firm Mattress for Heavier Sleepers

Firmness: about 7/10 | Score: 4.6/5 | Price: $1,600–$1,700 (Queen)

The Titan uses a reinforced, higher-gauge coil core built for sleepers over 230 lbs. It compressed measurably less than a standard hybrid under sustained heavy loads, and its reinforced perimeter gave some of the strongest edge support we have measured. The quilted top still cushions the shoulder and hip at higher body weights instead of bottoming out.

Best for: sleepers over 230 lbs and couples with a higher combined weight. Skip if: you weigh under 150 lbs — it will feel firmer than its rating suggests.

3. Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Firm — Best Luxury Firm Mattress

Firmness: about 7.5/10 | Score: 4.4/5 | Price: $2,679–$2,729 (Queen)

A traditional luxury innerspring with a Euro pillow top. You rest on top of the surface rather than in it, which back and stomach sleepers liked, and the coil core sleeps cooler than foam-heavy beds. It is the most expensive pick here, and our full lab measurements for this model are still being added to the review.

Best for: back and stomach sleepers who want a hotel-style firm bed. Skip if: you are a lighter side sleeper or shopping on value.

4. Leesa Original Hybrid 11" — Best Medium-Firm Hybrid for Back and Stomach Sleepers

Firmness: medium-firm | Score: 4.4/5 | Price: $1,062–$1,082 (Full)

Not as firm as the picks above, but its pocketed coils give consistent spinal alignment without excess sink, edge support that is usable to the full width, and a cooling foam top. Side sleepers under 130 lbs reported shoulder pressure in our testing.

Best for: back and stomach sleepers who want firm-leaning support with a little contour.

5. Zinus Green Tea 12" — Best Budget Firm-Leaning Mattress

Firmness: medium-firm | Score: 4.2/5 | Price: $279–$299 (Queen)

For under $300, the Zinus measured 0.18 psi lumbar pressure for back sleepers — excellent alignment for the price — and very low motion transfer (0.04g). The trade-offs are real: 3.1 inches of edge compression, a warmer all-foam surface, and a short 30-night trial.

Best for: average-weight back and stomach sleepers, guest rooms and first apartments. Skip if: you weigh over 230 lbs or sleep on your side above 180 lbs.

How to Choose a Firm Mattress

  • Check the number, not the label. "Firm" ranges from about 6 to 9 out of 10 across brands. If you have found medium-firm beds too soft, look for 7.5 or higher.
  • Body weight shifts the feel. The same mattress feels firmer to a 130 lb sleeper than to a 250 lb sleeper. Heavier sleepers need reinforced coils (like the Titan) more than a harder surface.
  • Choose coils for edge support and cooling. All four hybrids and innersprings here beat the all-foam Zinus on edge support and heat.
  • Use the trial. Firmness preference is personal. The Titan's 365-night trial is the safest; the Zinus's 30 nights is the riskiest.
  • Too firm already? A soft topper is cheaper than a new bed — see our mattress topper guide.

Research and Sources

Our picks come from our own hands-on testing. The guidance on firmness and back pain is checked against these sources:

  • Kovacs et al., The Lancet (2003) — randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain: after 90 days, people on medium-firm mattresses reported less pain in bed and less disability than those on firm mattresses.
  • Radwan et al., Sleep Health (2015) — systematic review of 24 controlled trials: medium-firm and self-adjusted mattresses were best for sleep comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the firmest mattress you have tested?

The Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe — about 8/10 on its Firm side and about 9/10 on its Firmer side.

Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

Not for most people. A randomised trial found medium-firm mattresses reduced chronic low back pain more than firm ones. Firm beds suit stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers best.

Are firm mattresses good for side sleepers?

Usually not for lighter side sleepers, who feel pressure at the shoulder and hip. Heavier side sleepers (over about 230 lbs) can be comfortable on a 7/10 mattress like the Titan Hybrid Luxe.

How do I make a firm mattress softer?

Add a 2–3 inch memory foam or latex topper. It adds pressure relief at the surface while keeping the firm support underneath.
