If your neck aches in the morning, a pillow at the wrong height for your frame is one common culprit. A fixed-loft pillow is a guess: it either suits your neck and shoulder width or it doesn't. The Nuzzle Adjustable Pillow addresses that with shredded gel memory foam you can remove through a zipper until the height feels right, and it comes as a set of two.

Nuzzle rates the pillow medium. At full fill, shredded memory foam is firmer than down, with pieces that shift and settle around your head rather than holding one molded shape. Edges are softer than a solid foam pillow's.

How the design maps to sleep positions:

• Back sleepers: usually want a moderate loft so the head isn't pushed forward; removing some fill gets you there.
• Side sleepers, broader shoulders: typically need more height, which full fill provides.
• Side sleepers, narrower shoulders: may prefer some fill removed.

Construction

Shredded fill lets you take out small amounts until the loft matches your neck and shoulders. The gaps between pieces let air move, which is why shredded foam is generally considered cooler than a solid foam block; gel infusion is marketed as adding a little extra heat absorption.

Neck and Shoulder Support

A pillow's job is to fill the gap between head and mattress so the neck stays roughly in line with the spine. That gap depends on your shoulder width, your sleep position and how far your mattress lets you sink. Adjustable fill is the most practical way to match it without buying several pillows.

For back sleepers, a moderate loft with fill removed should avoid pushing the chin toward the chest. For side sleepers, full fill is aimed at broader shoulders, with fill removed for narrower frames.

Heat

The Nuzzle combines two features usually associated with cooler-sleeping foam pillows: shredded pieces that leave air channels, and gel infusion. It should run cooler than a solid memory foam block. It isn't built around airflow the way an open-grid pillow is, and it lacks the dedicated cooling cover of the Coop Home Goods Cool+, so it's a reasonable middle ground rather than a top choice for very hot sleepers. We have no temperature readings of our own.

Adjusting the Fill and Longevity

Adjusting is a bit messy the first time, since removed fill needs somewhere to go; keep it in a sealed bag in case you want to add it back. A sensible approach is to sleep on both pillows at full fill for a few nights, then remove small handfuls at a time.

Shredded memory foam generally holds its volume better than polyester fiberfill, and because you can add reserved fill back as the pieces settle, you can compensate for some compression over time.

Washing and Care

• Outer cover: removable; machine wash on a gentle cold cycle and tumble dry low.
• Liner and fill: don't machine wash as a whole; spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
• Arrival: ships compressed; allow a few hours to expand. A mild new-foam smell is common with memory foam and usually fades with airing.
